Seeking the Kingdom
Seeking the Kingdom: Living for Something Bigger Than Ourselves
Recovery is not just about leaving something behind. It is about stepping into something greater. Many of us spent years feeling lost, chasing temporary highs, or trying to fill an emptiness we could not explain. Even after breaking free from addiction, it is easy to wonder, What now?
Jesus invites us into a bigger story. He calls us not only to healing, but to purpose. When we seek God’s kingdom, we discover that life is about more than just surviving. It is about living with meaning, serving others, and trusting that God is leading us forward.
Jesus says in Matthew 6:33:
"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."
When we shift our focus from our past to God’s bigger purpose, we find the strength to keep moving forward.
Finding Purpose Beyond Addiction
For many of us, addiction was about more than just substances or behaviors. It was about trying to escape pain, numb emotions, or fill a sense of emptiness. When we stop running, that emptiness does not just disappear. It needs to be filled with something real.
God did not create us to live small, self-focused lives. He designed us for connection, love, and purpose.
Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:10:
"For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago."
God has always had a plan for our lives. Even when we were far from Him, He never stopped seeing our worth. Recovery is not just about avoiding old patterns. It is about stepping into the good things God created us to do.
Serving Others Helps Us Heal
One of the greatest ways to stay grounded in our own healing is to serve others. When we pour into others, we find new strength in our own journey. Service keeps us connected to community, reminds us that we are needed, and helps us focus on something bigger than ourselves.
Jesus gave us the perfect example of this. Even though He was the Son of God, He spent His life serving others. In Mark 10:45, He said:
"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Healing does not mean we have to wait until we have everything figured out before we can help others. Sometimes, it is in the act of serving that we experience the deepest transformation.
Letting Go of Control and Trusting God’s Way
Seeking God’s kingdom means surrendering our need to control everything. In addiction, many of us tried to manage life on our own terms, often leading to more pain. True freedom comes when we let go of our own plans and trust that God’s way is better.
Jesus taught us to pray, “May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)
Trusting God does not mean everything will be easy. It means believing that He is leading us somewhere good, even when we do not have all the answers.
An Invitation to Something Greater
God invites us to live for something bigger than ourselves. He calls us to step out of the past and into a future filled with purpose, healing, and love.
Where might God be inviting you to serve? What would it look like to trust His way instead of your own?
Whatever step you take next, remember this. You are not just recovering from something. You are stepping into something new. God’s kingdom is waiting, and you have a place in it.
